SSC Jazz Club 20/10
October 20 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
FreeOn 20th October the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club is pleased to present Paul Hendon Quintet – “Benny Goodman Tribute”.
After graduating from university, Paul joined various jazz bands within the Toowoomba Jazz Society, mentored by Denis Levonis. Through his work travel, Paul had the opportunity to hear and play with many Australian jazz greats, including Tom Baker, Bob Barnard, Janet Seidel, Don Burrows, George Golla, Kevin Hunt, and many more.
Paul’s forte is music from the swing era. 2002 saw the formation of “Paul Hendon’s Goodman Quartet” with Brisbane musicians Dave McCallum (drums) and Jo Bloomfield (piano), along with Marsh Robinson (double bass). In 2003, Sydney vibraphonist Glenn Henrich joined the band, which produced their first CD from a live recording at Preston Peak Wines “Jazz in the Vineyard”. The band was invited to play at the Manly Jazz Festival in Sydney. Later, Sunshine Coast guitarist and luthier Dave Burrows rounded out the group to a full sextet.
More recently Paul has enjoyed collaborating in some new combos such as “Double Trouble” with Dan Cosgrove, “Rythme Mélodique” with Paul Williams, and Toowoomba group “Rhythm Plus+” with vocalist Hannah Groves.
Whilst clarinet is his main instrument, Paul doubles on saxophones and dabbles on piano.
The lineup is:
Paul Hendon – Clarinet, Saxophone
Andrew Shaw – Bass
Jo Bloomfield – Keyboard
Dave Burrows – Guitar
Rod Ford – Drums
