Attendees must be 18 yrs old or over.

The plot

The Yellow Birds begins with “The war tried to kill us in the spring” and follows Private John Bartle, the novel’s protagonist and narrator, in Al Tafar, Iraq; Fort Dix, New Jersey; Kaiserslautern, Germany; the author’s and narrator’s hometown of Richmond, Virginia; and Fort Knox, Kentucky, from December 2003 to April 2009.

The book is classified as a novel, so it is fictional and draws on the imagination of the author; however, it is based on some of Powers’ experiences during his tour of duty. The novel received numerous honors, including the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, and a movie adaptation was released in 2017.
